“Art and science: shared trajectories”, a dialogue between XAVI BOU and Josep Perelló

“Art and science: shared trajectories”, a dialogue between the artist Xavi Bou and the professor and researcher Josep Perelló, will take place on 4th June at 7pm at galeria SENDA. Framed in Bou’s current exhibition at the gallery, both will offer us their perspective that intertwines art and science.

A meeting of gazes

Xavi Bou, through his project “Ornithographies”, explores the flight of birds using advanced photographic techniques that reveal patterns invisible to the human eye. His work is not only visually stunning, but also invites deep reflection on nature, the importance of preserving wildlife, and our place in it.

Josep Perelló is a professor in the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Barcelona (UB) and a researcher at the UB Institute of Complex Systems (UBICS). Founder of the OpenSystems-UB group, Perelló promotes scientific research projects with citizen participation and artistic practices. His work in citizen science and collective experiments for public space has been recognised and acclaimed both locally and internationally.

For all this, Perelló‘s historical knowledge and Bou‘s artistic and nature experience converge in a talk that fuses art and science from a different perspective.

The fusion between art and science

During the talk, Josep Perelló will provide a historical perspective on the intersection between art and science, exploring how these two fields have dialogued and influenced each other over the centuries. His experience as head and curator of the Science Area at Arts Santa Mònica, as well as his work at the Barcelona Office of Citizen Science and the Ciutat i Ciència Biennial, provides him with an enriching vision that promises to broaden our understanding and appreciation of this interdisciplinary fusion.

Xavi Bou, for his part, will share his personal experience and creative process. He will take us through the development of his project “Ornithographies”, from the initial inspiration to the technical and artistic realisation of his photographs. It will be a unique opportunity to understand art from the perspective of the person who creates it, and how science can be a powerful tool in the artistic process.

Dialogue within the framework of Jordi Bernadó’s LAST & LOST with Hilde Teerlinck, curator and director of the Han Nefkens Foundation, and Giulia Sonetti, transdisciplinary researcher at UPC.

In the framework of Jordi Bernadó‘s exhibition LAST & LOST, Galeria SENDA will host a dialogue between Hilde Teerlinck and Giulia Sonetti on Monday 11th March at 7 p.m. on some of the main reflections of the exhibition.

What are the philosophical and ecological challenges of the present? What role does art have in creating sustainable alternatives? What should or can the societies of the future look like?

LAST & LOST explores the notion of loss. Or, rather, the way we relate to a world we recognize less and less. The climate crisis, the crossroads of digitalization, democratic setbacks, etc., configure a paradigm rooted in uncertainty and fear. Also, inevitably, crossed by glimmers of hope. Bernadó approaches this double condition – uncertainty and hope – and captures it in a series of eight pieces, exhibited at Galeria SENDA.

Hilde Teerlinck and Giulia Sonetti will meet under the umbrella of these photographs to bring the reflections of LAST & LOST to new grounds and conclusions from their fields of knowledge.

Teerlinck is an art curator and director of the Han Nefkens Foundation. Her curatorial line has been characterized by a strong international accent. In 2022, she curated the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, with the artist Francis Alÿs. Previously, she has been the artistic director of the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, the director of the Centre Rhénan d’Art Contemporain (CRAC Alsace) in Altkirch and the director of the FRAC (Fonds régional d’art contemporain) in Nord-Pas-de-Calais (Dunkerque). In 2015, she was one of the four curators of “Beaufort Outside the Borders”.

Giulia Sonetti, transdisciplinary researcher at University Polytechnic of Barcelona – and member of the Postdoc Academy for Transformational Leadership (Robert Bosch Stiftung Foundation, Berlin) will talk with her. She organizes science workshops across Europe, and designs and implements national, EU FP7 / H2020 research projects with inter/transdisciplinary approaches, university campus sustainability management strategies and transformative education methods. Currently, she is the director and principal investigator of the project “TrUST -Transdisciplinarity for Urban Sustainability Transition“.

Jaume Plensa, Jean-Marie del Moral and Màrius Carol meet at Galeria SENDA

Last Monday, November 7, Barcelona became the epicenter of art and reflection when Galeria SENDA opened its doors to welcome three prominent names from the cultural world: sculptor Jaume Plensa, photographer Jean-Marie del Moral and journalist Màrius Carol. The reason for this meeting was the presentation of the book “Interior, 2022”, a work that transcends the printed pages to explore the challenges and opportunities faced by creators in the context of a globalized market.

The theme of the talk, entitled “Shared Challenges. Creating in a Global Marketplace“, addressed profound and pertinent questions about the creative process in the contemporary world. How do artists face the pressure of producing in a globalized environment? What impact do market trends have on creativity and originality? These were some of the questions raised during the conversation, which turned into an exciting dialogue between creative minds.

Jaume Plensa, known for his imposing sculptures that explore the relationship between the individual and the environment, shared his vision of the need to maintain authenticity in a world flooded with external influences. For Plensa, true creativity arises from the connection with oneself and the surrounding environment, and it is crucial to preserve that connection in a globalized context.

For his part, Jean-Marie del Moral, whose photography captures the essence of urban life and human diversity, spoke about the role of art as a tool for expression and resistance in an increasingly homogenized world. For Del Moral, creativity is an act of resistance against uniformity, a way of celebrating the diversity and complexity of the world we inhabit.

Màrius Carol, a journalist with a long career in the cultural field, provided a unique perspective on the role of the media in the promotion and dissemination of contemporary art. In a world where attention is fragmented and information is constantly flowing, Carol stressed the importance of telling authentic and meaningful stories that connect with audiences on an emotional level.

The presentation of the book “Interior, 2022” marked the beginning of a series of #SENDATalks, a typology of talks organized by Galeria SENDA that brings together artists, creators and thinkers to explore relevant topics in the world of art and culture. These meetings provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, debate and reflection, fostering an open and enriching dialogue between different disciplines and perspectives.

The event concluded with a question and answer session, where the audience had the opportunity to interact with the speakers and delve deeper into the topics discussed. The atmosphere was one of inspiration and camaraderie, leaving a lasting impression on all present and sowing the seeds for future conversations and creative collaborations. In short, the talk at Galeria SENDA was much more than a book presentation; it was a transformative encounter that illuminated the complexities and challenges of the creative process in the 21st century, and demonstrated the power of art and culture to bring people together and enrich our lives.
