Elena del Rivero has devoted her practice to exploring diverse written and visual forms as a means of communicating personal experiences, with a particular emphasis on the epistolary format. While her work is rooted in painting and works on paper, she has also developed large-scale installations, engaging with printmaking and analogue photography. Her projects unfold gradually and do not always follow predictable outcomes. Del Rivero draws inspiration from what is at hand, from historical events she has witnessed, and from the everyday, with its multiple symbolic references. She embraces a utopian notion of reparative action, which she undertakes whenever possible, especially when her works are damaged—intentionally or not—during the process of making. In doing so, she metaphorically sutures her own “wounds.”
