Nascut a Floral Park, Nova York, 1946. El treball del fotògraf Robert Mapplethorpe va encarnar la subcultura de la ciutat de Nova York a finals dels anys 60 i principis dels 70. Va documentar l'escena BDSM a través d'un ull artístic molt entrenat, vinculant l'estètica de la seva temàtica amb les tradicions clàssiques de la producció artística. Va abordar el tema amb la mateixa lent que ho faria amb "clavels en un bol". El seu treball i la seva inclusió en espais públics i exposicions van provocar un debat nacional als anys 80 sobre el finançament governamental d'obres considerades "xocant" pels espectadors conservadors i la dreta religiosa.
