Peter Halley presenta "Heterotopia I" en la Bienal de Venecia 2019

Según el filósofo francés Michel Foucault, las heterotopias son mundos entre mundos, que reflejan pero perturba lo que se encuentra en el exterior. Son espacios que de algún modo, son transgresivos, o “otros”: intensos, contradictorios o transformadores. Foucault provee ejemplos: barcos, cementerios, prisiones, jardines de la antigüedad, ferias, baños Turcos, y mucho más.

Dentro del espacio de exhibición de cuarenta metros de largo, en la Academia de Arte, Peter Halley ha creado una secuencia de habitaciones temáticamente variadas que progresan en un santuario abovedado. Este laberinto parecido a un videojuego se desarrolla de una habitación a otra, combinando elementos de la arquitectura clásica como las acanaladuras, los cenotafios, y un frontón roto, con impresiones digitales del tamaño de una pared, matrices de LED que cambian de color, y una escultura a gran escala cortada con láser.

Para enriquecer más el lenguaje de esta narrativa, Halley invitó artistas americanos como Lauren Clay, R.M. Fisher, y Andrew Kuo para contribuir en la instalación. Trabajando con murales de pared a pared impresos digitalmente, Lauren Clay y Andrew Kuo crearon habitaciones separadas realizando sus propias visiones individuales. R.M. Fischer produjo la escultura totémica iluminada en el santuario que culmina la instalación. Además, la escritora con sede en París, Elena Sorokina, ha contribuido con los textos originales de los muros.
